Paul Kalanithi
American · b. 1977
Paul Kalanithi held degrees in English literature before becoming a Stanford neurosurgeon — a path chosen to stand exactly where biology and meaning intersect. Diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer at 36, he kept operating, became a father, and wrote When Breath Becomes Air in his final two years; it was published posthumously and became a Pulitzer finalist.
